The Maelstrom is a Grand Company located in Limsa Lominsa. It is led by Chief Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn.

Overview[]

At the heart of the Thalassocratic Navy lies the Crimson Fleet, composed of five independent squadrons, the First through the Fifth. The Maelstrom is an extension of the First Squadron, expanding its role as armada flagship, and granting it power to administer not only the remaining four squadrons, but the various merchant fleets that navigate the seas off Vylbrand.

With the reestablishment of the Maelstrom, the Admiral has invoked ancient maritime law, by which she promoted herself to Chief Admiral in 1572, effectively expanding her authority to cover not only state and military dealings, but grant her the power to directly command all ships in Lominsan waters. While averse to this encroachment on their independence, the city-state's pirates are willing to put aside their differences, lest the Garlean Empire take more than just their freedom.

Symbolism[]

On Vylbrand, a former Grand Company by the name of "Maelstrom" was founded on the eve of the Fifth Astral Era by the maritime civilisation of Nym. The Nymian Royal Marines assembled the Grand Company to rescue the lives of their countrymen in the days prior to the arrival of the enormous floods of the Sixth Umbral Calamity. The Marines drew a magickal geometry on the water's surface while sailing ships entered what is now known as Galadion Bay, formerly known as the Bay of Nym. They called forth an even more powerful maelstrom to snare the fury of the sea as it crashed into the city in the form of towering waves. This tactic bought the townspeople enough time to flee to the mountains with the blood of many soldiers and scholars. The civilization's capital, Nym, was destroyed by the whirlpool's fury and succeeding lesser waves, and the survivors fled to other places to seek their fortunes.

Characteristics[]

The Crimson Fleet and the privateers are two armadas under the control of Maelstrom Command. The former, which makes up five of the Lominsan Armada's initial nine squadrons, is the Maelstrom's primary force. The Seventh Umbral Calamity caused the formal Lominsan navy and the Knights of the Barracuda to completely incorporate into the Maelstrom, albeit initially maintaining their own command structure. Since being granted freedom, the Yellowjackets, who were originally the Barracuda's soldiers, have since been granted independence to maintain order throughout Lominsan territory.

On the other hand, the privateer fleet is an auxiliary force. It consists of pirate ships that respond to the Admiral's call, armed merchant ships that were requisitioned, and decommissioned warships refurbished for duty. The Foreign Levy makes up the last part of this armada; it is an incalculably big group of adventurers whose knowledge of land combat makes up for Limsa's previous lack of it.[1]

Notable Officers[]

Eynzahr Slafyrsyn[]

"Some among us believe that piracy is a time-honored tradition. But so long as we cling to this tradition, we will never know lasting prosperity."

Grand Storm Marshal Slafyrsyn, the Maelstrom's second-in-command, serves as Merlwyb's valued counsel and draws on his fifty-eight summers of experience. He has frequently had to calm the Admiral down since, when enraged, she will try to lead the charge. He is a renowned as a competent and courageous marauder on the field (or seas) of war, reflecting his bravery.

The Sea Wolf's tale is shrouded in mystery, despite the fact that Eynzahr asserts to have spent many years as captain of a commercial ship with heavy armament. According to the rumors of the fishwives, he is said to be the mythical pirate king Mistbeard, who no one has seen in twenty-two summers. They also claim that he became friends with Merlwyb as a result of their severe rivalry and fighting.

He is a passionate mask collector, yet nobody seems to know why.

R'ashaht Rhiki[]

"The soldiers of our company fight until the very last breath—the very last drop of blood."

Commander Rhiki, twenty-seven years of age, was raised in Limsa Lominsa, leaving her family's house before turning twenty in order to become an adventurer. Despite her small stature, she has an agility and innate strength, swiftly rising to prominence as a marauder known for her propensity for using extreme brutality in combat. She was among the first to swear fealty to the Maelstrom after it was founded, and at the youthful age of twenty-two, her exploits as an explorer earned her the command of the Foreign Levy. R'ashaht joined the battle at Carteneau and earned distinction by killing an imperial pilus in single combat.

R 'ashaht enjoys meat even more than her fish-loving Seeker of the Sun brethren, and it is said that she has consumed the flesh of innumerable different animals, from oliphant to snurble.[2]

The Foreign Levy
With its ships, Limsa Lominsa has dominated the seas as a naval force; yet, the same cannot be said of its army, which is indisputably weak in comparison to the armies of the other Eorzean city-states. The Foreign Levy counteracts this shortcoming by employing seasoned explorers.
