Eorzeans have a distinct system for measuring both distance and weight.
The ilm is the fundamental unit of measurement for length, roughly equivalent to the length of an adult Hyuran thumb, with the longer fulms, yalms, and malms calcuated using the ilm as base.
History[]
A pirate who had traveled to Limsa Lominsa in the year 986 of the Sixth Astral Era sought sailcloth on the black market. When his purchase didn't match the length he thought he had paid for, he became enraged and started a fight that resulted in the deaths or injuries of almost fifty individuals. Admiral Agatzahr Roehmerslyn swiftly apprehended the pirate and severed his thumb, announcing that it would be used as the nation's accepted standard for measuring an ilm. Disputes over ambiguous measures quickly disappeared as a result of the widespread distribution of cast-iron copies of the buccaneer's severed digit that served as one-ilm guidelines.[1]
